When we adorn our bodies with piercings we permeate this primary barrier, leaving the area open to infection. With some 600 species of bacteria occuring as natural flora on the epidermis and the continuous onslaught of external pathogenic species, the chance of infection is high Protat’s Technicians trialled many combinations of ingredients until they discovered the optimal blend that makes up the Hygienic Soothing Spray. The formulation is designed to protect the piercing without causing the skin tissue to become dehydrated. The unique combination of Centipeda cunninghamii (Sneezeweed or Old Man Weed) and Aloe Vera Extract (Aloe barbadensis) in an aqueous solution of glycerol and methocel is ideal as a topical humectant. Historically, the recommendation for piercing care centred on the drying out of the area to promote the formation of a scab. Recent clinical studies have found that the ideal condition to optimise the care of the piercing is a moist environment. Aloe Vera, a desert succulent, has outstanding moisturisation properties. The piercing undergoes three stages: inflammation, proliferation and remodelling. The functioning of the vascular and lymphatic systems is of primary importance. A reduction in vascular regeneration decreases oxygen movement to the piercing, which in turn reduces the removal of excess fluids from the piercing site. Thus the piercing becomes inflamed and swollen, leading to further damage. Aloe Vera contains polysaccharides in its parenchymal cells. The polysaccharides, or mucilage, when placed over a piercing keep the area moist and turgid. Epidermal and fibroblast growth factors transfer from the mucilage to the piercing and stimulate the fibroblast directly for growth. Polysaccharides provide a synergistic effect of perfectly balanced mechanical and chemical processes. Extra moisturisation and piercing drainage is achieved by the dual activity of glycerol. Externally this ingredient has excellent water-retaining and emollient properties to assist. What is some times overlooked is the ability of glycerol to absorb moisture from the exposed or aggrevated tissues. This acts in synergy with the Aloe Vera reducing the discomfort. The final jewel to be discussed is that of Centipeda cunninghamii, a native Australian weed that has been used for centuries by the aborigines in traditional therapies. More recently Centipeda cunninghamii has been shown to: The scope and diversity of Protat Hygienic Soothing Spray makes it ideal for the immediate aftercare of piercings. Protat Soothing Hygienic Body Piercing Aftercare Spray is of superior quality and efficacy, to deal with the undesirable side of body adornment. i Johnson A: ‘Towards rapid healing”.
